Football Friday (8/13/21)

Here's a brief summary of football updates from around the world:

DUDE'S ARENA/INDOOR FOOTBALL TOP TEN:

#1 - Albany Empire (NAL) 8-1-0.

Last week:  Beat Carolina Cobras 55-41 in NAL Semifinals.  The Empire overcame an early 14-13 deficit.  The Empire scored 21 points with back to back touchdowns from Darius Prince from Tommy Grady in the second quarter to put some distance between them.  Carolina pulled within 41-35 in the fourth quarter but a quick strike to Phillip Barnett put the Empire up 48-35 for good.  Next:  Aug 14 - Albany will host the NAL Championship game against the Columbus Lions.

#2 - Arizona Rattlers (IFL) 10-2-0.

Last week:  The Rattlers dominated Tucson 55-28, to run their all-time record to 7-0 against the Sugar Skulls.  The Rattlers ran only 10 plays compared to the Skulls' 29 in the first half, but the Rattlers built a 27-14 lead, mainly thanks to special teams.  Jarrod Harrington returned a missed field-goal try 56 yards for a touchdown, and on a kickoff returned it 38 yards to the 10, leading to Darrell Monroe's second score of the half, taking a pitch from Drew Powell from 5 yards out to make it 27-14 with 26 seconds left in the half.  Next:  Aug 13 at Spokane Shock (6-5).

#3 - Omaha Beef (CIF) 9-4-0.  Won Champions Bowl VI.  Season Complete.

#4 - Frisco Fighters (IFL) 9-2-0.

Last week:  Defeated Spokane Shock 45-34.  On consecutive stands to start the game, interceptions by relative newcomer DaMarcus Wilson and Cameron Hilton led to Fighter touchdowns. In the second quarter, newly-signed linebacker Tre Harvey intercepted Shock quarterback Marcus McDade's pass and walked it in for a score.  Defensive lineman Charles Williams notched his league-best eight sack of the season, capturing McDade for a safety. He later earned his ninth sack of the season.  Before the end of the first half, Malik Henry's third touchdown pass and a subsequent PAT and deuce by kicker Kristov Martinez widened the Fighters' lead to 38-14.  Next:  Aug 14 vs. Green Bay Blizzard (5-7)

#5 - Columbus Lions (NAL) 7-2-0.

Last week:  Defeated Orlando Predators 61-43 in NAL semifinals.  In the first quarter, Predators quarterback Patrick O’Brien lost the football in the middle of his throwing motion, sending the ball flying backwards and into the end zone where Ken Washington recovered for the easy score to make it 19-2. A goal line stand from the Lions defense gave Espinosa and the offense the ball with under two minutes remaining. They wasted little time finding the end zone again with a deep throw to Antwane Grant from Espinosa to make it 27-2 with 54 seconds to go.  Next:  Aug 14 at Albany Empire (8-1).  Lions are in the NAL Championship game for the third time in four seasons

#6 - Massachusetts Pirates (IFL) 8-3-0.

Last week:  Defeated Green Bay Blizzard 50-33.  Running Back Justin Stockton ran for three touchdowns as the Massachusetts Pirates defeated the Green Bay Blizzard 50-33 at Phoenix Field at the DCU Center. The victory was the sixth in a row for Massachusetts which equals the longest winning streak in franchise history.  Next:  Aug 15 at Northern Arizona Wranglers (1-11)
