New Professional Volleyball League Getting Set for 2024


A sport which has been popular in high schools across America has had a difficult time establishing a professional league.  The Professional Volleyball Federation (PVF) is hoping to change that next spring as the women's indoor league plans 8-10 cities to play a 16-game schedule.

Jen Spicher, a respected business executive who has built sales teams responsible for billions of dollars of revenue generation, has been tapped as Chief Executive Officer. Reynaud, a member of the USA Volleyball Hall of Fame who spent 26 seasons as head coach at Florida State, will serve as Vice President of Volleyball Operations. Corbelli, also a Hall of Fame coach who amassed more than 600 career victories, will assist Reynaud in developing the league's volleyball operations.

League founders believe that volleyball is one of the world’s premier team games, and the American public is recognizing that, as women’s volleyball at the collegiate level has become the third-most watched live college sport on television, behind only football and men’s basketball. The PVF hopes to provide a new horizon for young volleyball players in America who currently have very few options to play professionally without having to leave the country.

The PVF has already awarded franchises to Grand Rapids (MI), Atlanta (GA), Columbus (OH) and Omaha (NE) which they feel are hotbeds for volleyball.  Other franchises could be added in Texas and California.

The International Volleyball Association (IVA), Major League Volleyball (MLV) and United States Professional Volleyball League (USPVL) also made attempts in establishing a professional indoor volleyball league.  The IVA lasted the longest of the past leagues and played for five seasons from 1975-1980.

Cincinnati Bengals' quarterback, Joe Burrow, is also a partner in the new league.

The Union Hockey League (UHL) which is a senior "A" semi-pro hockey league representing the Midwest and Northeast, will begin their 2023-2024 season this month with eight teams.   The UHL is hybrid league, a mix between semi-professional hockey and senior hockey, with players being compensated for travel and other expenses via a ticket sales split but allowing them to retain their amateur status. Players can also make a substantial commission by selling season tickets and partnerships. Each team will be playing a 32-game season, with two tournaments against other senior leagues in the works to bring the season total up to 40. Could Minor League Sports Come to Murfreesboro, Tennessee?

Yesterday, the city of Murfreesboro, Tennessee announced that Legacy Sports Tennessee will construct a multi-use sports and entertainment facility to be opened in 2024.  The plan features a 6,000-seat arena, outdoor amphitheater, fitness center, gaming as well as retail and dining space. With this ambitious plan, I wondered if this would open the door for any minor league sports to take notice and consider this area which is about 30 miles Southeast of Nashville.  Are we too close to Nashville?  Well, if you live here, you know that 30 miles will take at least 45 minutes or longer. This has me wondering if Murfreesboro would be a good location for a minor league sports team. Baseball Nashville has the Sounds AAA minor league team.   It isn't likely that Murfreesboro would get a team in the minor league system; however, they could get interest from a couple of the collegiate summer leagues such as the Coastal Plains League or Sunbelt League.    Basketball Except for the National Bas
