Notre Dame Wins First National Title in Lacrosse
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish has been known for their championship football teams but now they can add a national championship trophy for lacrosse after their 13-9 win over Duke this weekend in Philadelphia.
With the game tied 7-7 in the third quarter, Notre Dame scored on goals by Brian Tevlin and Chris Kavanagh 27 seconds apart to take a 9-7 lead. Eric Dobson extended the lead to 10-7 with 10:50 remaining in the fourth quarter to keep the lead for good. Notre Dame held Duke's two leading scorers, Brennan O'Neill and Dyson Williams, to just one goal each — a fitting end to the season for Notre Dame's top-10 scoring defense. Liam Entenmann was outstanding for Notre Dame. He made 18 saves in goal for the Fighting Irish which was a season-high.
The Fighting Irish - ranked third in the country - had lost to Duke in two previous appearances in the championship game. They lost 6-5 in overtime to the Blue Devils in 2010 and 11-9 in the 2014 final. They finished 2023 with a 14-2 record.
In the tournament, they defeated Utah 20-7 in the second round, John Hopkins 12-9 in the quarterfinals and a thrilling 13-12 win over Virginia in the semifinals.
