3-on-3 Hockey League Completes Second Season


The unique league named 3ICE where they play 3-on-3 hockey versus the tradition 5-on-5 we see in the winter just completed their second season.

3ICE is a lot like watching what is usually an overtime period in the National Hockey League (NHL) were there are only three players on the ice (along with the goalie).  At this point, the league is a touring, experimental league so there aren't any city-based franchises yet.  While each team is named after its coach for the time being, that will not be the case forever. Johnston explains that the league plans on shifting the names of their teams in the coming years to represent a location rather than a coach (For example, “Team Detroit” as opposed to “Team Murphy”). However, having each coach be the face of their teams provides plenty of reasons for fans of these former superstars to see them behind the bench.

3ICE was designed with leagues like basketball’s BIG3 in mind, and it provides hockey fans with a summer league to watch that takes the NHL’s overtime format and cranks it up a notch. Rather than a five-minute period with sudden death rules, 3ICE has two eight-minute periods that have a continuous play clock unless a penalty or injury occurs.

Hank Crone played hero in the game for Team Murphy, scoring a regulation goal and the shootout-winner. Brandon Pirri, an NHL veteran of 276 games, scored in the losing effort for Team Patrick. NHL legend and Hockey Hall of Famer Larry Murphy led Team Murphy and was named the 3ICE coach of the year. 3ICE’s top goaltender Eamon McAdam, a former third-round pick of the New York Islanders who spent several seasons in the AHL and ECHL before moving to Europe in 2021, backstopped Team Murphy to the title.

In its second season, the tour stops where Pittsburgh (PA), Hershey (PA), Grand Rapids (MI), Newark (NJ), Boston (MA), Clarksville (TN) and Philadelphia (PA).

New Version of Arena Football To Return in 2025

After a rough restart of the Arena Football League (AFL) last season which began with 16 teams and eventually dropped to eight teams by season’s end, the teams which survived formed a new league called Arena Football 1 (AF1)  and have released their 2025 schedule for the 12 teams which will once again try to establish its’ place on the indoor football map. The new AF1 plans to kick off their 2025 season on March 14 with the following teams set to play a 14-game schedule in the new league: West Division Arizona Bandits Billings Outlaws Oregon Lightning Washington Wolfpack Central Division Corpus Christi Tritons Salina Liberty Southwest Kansas Storm Wichita Regulators East Division Albany Firebirds Nashville Kats Orlando Predators Wilkes-Barre (team name TBA) Two other teams are planned for the 2026 season.  Let’s hope they survive this season first. Union Hockey League Begins 2023-2024 Season

The Union Hockey League (UHL) which is a senior "A" semi-pro hockey league representing the Midwest and Northeast, will begin their 2023-2024 season this month with eight teams.   The UHL is hybrid league, a mix between semi-professional hockey and senior hockey, with players being compensated for travel and other expenses via a ticket sales split but allowing them to retain their amateur status. Players can also make a substantial commission by selling season tickets and partnerships. Each team will be playing a 32-game season, with two tournaments against other senior leagues in the works to bring the season total up to 40.
