New Women's Pro Soccer League Kicks Off

The United Soccer League's Super League launched the latest women's division one pro league the past weekend with eight teams.  Taking advantage of the United States Women's team winning the gold medal in the Paris Summer Olympics, the new league had a successful opening weekend.  The Carolina Ascent FC opened to a sellout crowd of 10,553 fans and a 1-0 win over the DC Power FC.

The USL Super League is unique as it seeks to be more like leagues around the world by playing from August to June with a winter break from mid-December to mid-February and then continue until May.  The top four teams advance to a playoff tournament to determine the champion. Fans can follow games on the Peacock network.

Some of the new league's top players are Taylor Aylmer (Spokane), Amber Brooks (Dallas), Laveni Vaka (Fort Lauderdale) and Kelly Ann Livingstone (Carolina).

Although they won't compete directly with the current National Women's Soccer League (NWSL), there is already speculation of a merger if the USL Super League is successful in its first season.  The NWSL is in their 11th season with 14 teams and has had some sustained success of their own.

The USL Super League is attempting to establish a youth-to-pro pathway for women's players within the USL system.
