ESPN 8 - The Channel for Obscure Sports

I recently stumbled on to "The Ocho" which is ESPN's channel featuring obscure sports.  The channel was started in 2017.  

The Echo broadcasts unconventional and lesser-known sports competitions such as corn hole, horseshoes, darts, air hockey, ax throwing and many others.

The origin of ESPN8 came from the fictional television channel in the 2004 movie Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story which was a full-time channel showcasing obscure competitions that were "almost a sport".

Some of the most unusual competitions and events shown on the network include:
  • Mullet championships (yes, I'm afraid there is such a thing)
  • Teqball - combination of soccer and table tennis.
  • Onewheel - Skateboard with one wheel
  • Excel world championship - Did someone say spreadsheets?
  • Slippery stairs - Do we really need a sport for this?
  • Omegaball - Three soccer teams playing on a round field at the same time.
  • Chase Tag - Yes, same as our elementary school playground game.
  • Steinholding - A German-based sport involving beer.  Shocking.
The most popular sports shown include: Pickleball, Cornhole, Lawnmower Racing, Dodgeball and Kickball.

Union Hockey League Begins 2023-2024 Season

The Union Hockey League (UHL) which is a senior "A" semi-pro hockey league representing the Midwest and Northeast, will begin their 2023-2024 season this month with eight teams.   The UHL is hybrid league, a mix between semi-professional hockey and senior hockey, with players being compensated for travel and other expenses via a ticket sales split but allowing them to retain their amateur status. Players can also make a substantial commission by selling season tickets and partnerships. Each team will be playing a 32-game season, with two tournaments against other senior leagues in the works to bring the season total up to 40. Chihuahua Savage Repeat as MASL Champions

With all of the attention on Monterrey with their undefeated regular season record, it was the Chihuahua Savage which took the spotlight as they completed a sweep of the Kansas City Comets in the Ron Newman Cup final. With the score tied at 4-4 with 1:20 left, Hugo Puentes took the ball to the left side of the goal and in a half-turn, scored for the 5-4 game winner and series clincher for the Savage and repeat as Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) champions. The Savage also won a thriller in the first game of the series in Kansas City 4-3.  The Comets lead 3-1 but Chihuahua overcame that deficit with goals from Roberto Escalante and Puentes.  Escalante notched the game-winner with 3:44 left. Chihuahua swept the Baltimore Blast in last year's final.
